Private track day - 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA
On July 18, 2024, I travelled to Goodwood Motor Circuit as part of my experience towards my Level 3 Diploma in Motorsport. This day provided an incredible opportunity to work with the classic 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, renowned for its lightweight design and agile handling. The drivers were Rory and Gavin Henderson.
What I did
During the track day, I assisted in preparing the Alfa Romeo for its sessions on the circuit. This included checking tyre pressures and fluid levels and ensuring the car’s dials were working. Once the car was ready, I gathered data on its performance such as timings and tyre wear. Since the Giulia was about 750kg, the tyre wear was good and was reliable.
As the drivers took the Giulia Sprint GTA out for practice laps, I monitored their feedback closely. They praised the car's balance and responsiveness. The car was all good with all aspects such as the brakes and how the car behaved around the track. There was an issue with the oil temperature on the dashboard. Because of the vibrations from the engine, one of the sensors connected to the dashboard was loose. All it required was a click back into its original place.
Conclusion
In summary, the private track day event was successful. Like the first time, It was about making sure the drivers were happy about the setup. The drivers very much enjoyed their time on track.
I have learnt from the team:
- Consistency of getting used to different cars and their handling
- A wider insight into tyre wear
